PARENT DISCUSSION GROUP - Sharing the journey

Raise the Bar Psychology is pleased to announce a discussion group for those parents whose child has recently undertaken a comprehensive cognitive / psychological assessment. This can be a complex and confusing time in which sharing experiences, insights and emotions can be very reassuring and empowering. Come and meet other parents and be supported as you take those first important steps post assessment.

The group will be led by Dr Deborah Trengove and Sandra Barrow. Both Deborah and Sandra are former psychologists, and between them have decades of experience in educational settings.

Deborah brings both academic qualifications and extensive practical experience                                                   working with young people and their families. With four decades in schools, Deborah                                             has been a teacher, senior psychologist and educational leader. She has presented to                                         audiences both local and international. Deborah understands how complex and                                                     challenging the role of parents is in current times but believes that they are the most                                             powerful force in any young person’s life.

Sandra worked as a psychologist in schools and the private sector for over 30 years.                                              She has a deep-seated commitment to improving the lives of young people. Sandra                                              draws from an eclectic range of theoretical frameworks and brings to her work a “down                                      to earth”, compassionate and practical approach. Sandra believes strongly in the                                                  importance of families, at both a social and psychological level, and looks to support                                            the family system by empowering it with knowledge, skills and confidence.

The group will run over three sessions. It is hoped that participants will be able to attend all sessions.

  • Session 1: Unique journeys; shared experiences. Initial responses to the assessment and any diagnosis. Neurodiversity and the disability framework; stories of resilience and success.

  • Session 2: Engaging with schools and being an effective advocate; formal accommodations; reasonable adjustments.

  • Session 3: What is executive functioning and how do I enhance its development; essential parenting strategies; additional supports.
